Personalize Your Birth Experience with the Breidegam Family Birthing Center
Preparing for your little one is an exciting time. Whether you are early in the process and trying to get pregnant, are already pregnant, have been told you have a high-risk pregnancy, or you have a newborn or a growing child, we’re here for you and your baby.
The obstetrics and maternity team at Penn State Health St. Joseph has been recognized for outstanding patient care by Highmark Blue Shield with a Blue Distinction® Center for Maternity Care designation and has been designated as a Baby-Friendly Hospital by Baby-Friendly USA.
At the Breidegam Family Birthing Center we consistently support baby-friendly practices, such as immediate skin-to-skin contact and uninterrupted transition time after the baby’s birth.
“This is important from a bonding perspective, regardless of how the mother chooses to feed the baby,” explains Kirsten Benjamin, director of women and children’s services. “Unlike years ago, when the baby spent a lot of time away from the mom in the first hour, there are many things the nurse can do while the mom holds the baby. We want to support you being a new family unit and having that uninterrupted time together.”
As times have changed, mothers have become much more educated on evidence-based practices and better equipped to make informed choices about where and how they want to deliver. While at one time physicians and midwives made most of the decisions, our birthing center encourages moms and their partners to decide how their birth will go.
“Being a Baby-Friendly Hospital is a way to say our staff supports your wishes,” Benjamin says. “Whether you want a more home-like birth with the least amount of interventions or you want a place where you can have many interventions, we can do all of those things. It is up to you.”
