Ornament Sponsorship Keeps Memory of Loved One Alive
Every year since Tara Hritz unexpectedly lost her younger brother, she honors his memory by participating in the Lights of Love program and purchasing an ornament for the Christmas tree that sits in the lobby of Penn State Health St. Joseph Medical Center.
“Seeing his name on the tree is a reminder that people who don’t even know you, fight for you and care for you,” she says, referring to the paramedics and St. Joseph Emergency Department staff who fought to save her brother’s life, as well as the hospital chaplain, who comforted her family. “St. Joseph is my home away from home, and that comes with a big work family. His name on the tree is for the gratitude I have for all my peers, who cared for me and my family in the following days and understand my tears ever since. On the tree, my brother is always remembered.”
Offered through the St. Joseph Medical Center Foundation, the Lights of Love program seeks donors to fill the Christmas trees in the Bern and Downtown Reading campus lobbies with stars and ornaments, for a $50 or $10 donation respectively, in honor of a loved one or colleague.
